St Augustine

We spent 3 days (4 nights) in St Augustine, and really enjoyed our time.  We took a trolly tour (great way to get an overview/intro of the town/city).  St Augustine is the oldest continually inhabited settlement/city in the US (older than Jamestown, older than Plymouth Rock etc).  Walked to and toured the St Augustine lighthouse & maritime museum (Deltaville museum membership got us in for free).  Great views and lots of history.  Very impressed with Henry Flagler who developed much of the city in the late 1800s with goal of competing with the Spanish/french Riviera… winter playground for the VERY wealthy.  Renting a room at his Ponce de Leon hotel for the season (didn’t do short stays) cost $9000 in 1890… the equivalent of $325,000 today…. That says all we need to know about who stayed there.  Very impressive “campus”… the hotel is now home to Flagler College (since 1968).  Great dinner (with Dave Boyuka & Reggie on Tina Marie) at Columbia… (Cuban restaurant since 1905), wonderful lunch at Greek/Polish restaurant,m Gaufre’s & Goods.  Also had lunch at the Cafe Alcazar… which is in the deep end of what was once the largest indoor pool in the world (in what was Hotel, Alcazar, also owned by Henry Flagler).  Toured the St Augustine Distillery (free tour… nice shop at end of tour).  We’ll be back!
